Lupin III - First Series Episode 2

The Man They Called a Magician

This is the episode with Pycal, who in the subtitles was referred to as Piker, which is lame. So, Pycal is sleeping in bed in stunning designer pajamas when two guys very rudely barge in and shoot him like a bajillion times with machine guns. Pycal twitches as he is shot and falls to the floor. The guys leave, but Pycal is still alive.

Fujiko is still everygirl, appearing before Lupin and Jigen in a mess o' flames, being rescued and taken in. It is then when we learn that Lupin gets hives from octopi. And, in complete sissy manner, he runs from one. Right....

Pycal then appears where the three are, burns Jigen and Lupin, gets shot, shot again, slaps Fujiko to the floor (Awesome!), shoots out more flames and then leaves with a knocked out Fujiko. Oh yeah, Pycal shoots flames out of his finger. Bullets don't do anything to him, either. And later on he floats.

Back at Pycal's stunning cabin, which sits near a river and a waterfall, Fujiko makes these come ons to Pycal and then shoots him, which only gets him angry. So angry in fact that he rips her clothes off. (Nothing says "I'm angry!" like ripping off someones clothes.) She is then tied up and hung from some sort of trapdoor thing. It seems all very inescapable, but of course she ends up escaping it.

Lupin has Pycal figured all out with a small flame thrower connected to his finger and sheet glass to stand on, making him seem like he's floating. It is then when Lupin and Jigen laugh way too hard for something that isn't funny. (That whole laughing thing disturbs me greatly.) There is then a dramatic moment when Lupin tells Jigen he can't win.

I think this is where the whole microfilm thing comes in. At least that was when I first took notice of it. Lupin has three microfilms which holds a secret and until he knows that secret he can't defeat Pycal. Will he figure it out? Will he fail and die forever? The suspense!

Fujiko then tells Pycal through a recording that Lupin is coming to see him because she says she loves both men. (That whore!) Suddenly Pycal's cabin is like 500 miles away as Lupin drives and drives and drives to reach it. Pycal jumps in a plane and flies to meet Lupin's car (Was the cabin ever that far away?) and then he jumps from the plane onto the roof of the car and then suddenly appears in the backseat. (I guess that's why he's called a magician because he's all magical.) And then Pycal shoots Lupin in the back of the head and Lupin dies! *gasp* Oh wait, no, nevermind, he was just pretending. Phew! I thought the series was going to end.

Lupin is stunned from the shot and his car drives through guard rails and into the ocean below, Pycal bailing out before then. The car sinks to the bottom of the ocean where Lupin sits kind of spaced out looking. Fujiko appears as a mermaid and says goodbye to him. Jigen then appears and talks to him, but then he becomes an octopus who is reaching a tentacle out towards Lupin, who sees it as Jigen's hand and reaches out to grab it. The tentacle then becomes a rope and Lupin is pulled up out of the water by Jigen. I guess it's because I'm not high on drugs that the whole thing confuses me.

In the end Lupin figures out the microfilms, which is for a strong skin-like armor. I doubt it would stop machines guns, grenades and rockets, but whatever. So, Lupin catches Pycal on fire and the flames consume him. Does Pycal do the reasonable thing and leave the cabin and jump into the river that is right there? Of course not. That would make sense. Instead, Pycal starts to climb down a rope hanging from the trap door. He climbs slowly to the water that is like twenty stories below. Of course, the rope burns and snaps and he plummets into the water.

For his sins he is given a remarkable and awe inspiring OVA which even he won't forget. Manga Pycal was better, I thought. It was hard to be negative with this episode, as it is one I like. I even laughed at the whole octopus giving Lupin hives thing, as dumb as that was.

My Favorite Subtitle: However, you were too close to me that time so it was still hurt. (Lupin telling Pycal how he had the armor on when he was shot in the head.)
