Lupin III - First Series Episode 4

One Chance To Breakout

Lupin starts off by playing the role of a racist and goes all blackface. He then sneaks somewhere to get a metal box, which is hooked to something. And then, because he can, Zenigata appears and shoots at Lupin, hitting him. Jigen then hooks the box to a helicopter and flies away, leaving Lupin behind, who ended up getting shot with sleeping....bullets....or something.

Lupin starts playing odd mind games on Zenigata as they head to the prison. Once they arrive at the prison, Lupin and Zenigata have this odd and out of place conversation to explain to the viewer about the different route the car took to the prison and all of that stuff.

Zenigata then has a little bit too much fun, telling the guards to fit Lupin in a straight jacket. Then he tells them to watch Lupin carefully until the execution. (He seems a little too overjoyed at the whole execution thing, too.)

Lupin then starts yelling about how he isn't Lupin and how random guards are really Lupin. Zenigata is annoyed at this, telling another man to be patient, as Lupin will soon be put to death.

Meanwhile, Fujiko is outside of the prison, trying to "rescue" Lupin. But, Jigen is there to stop her at every attempt. Of course, she doesn't care about Lupin, but the key he has to open the box with.

Zenigata then starts to worry, as he doesn't want Lupin to die. (Finally, Zenigata becomes normal again...) He realizes that with Lupin dead his life would serve no purpose. (It's so pathetic you can't help but feel sorry for the guy, you know?) He sits around and wonders why Lupin hasn't tried to escape, yet, as he knows he will.

Half a year goes by and Zenigata is now more worried. Lupin continues screaming about him not being Lupin and how random guy is Lupin. Fujiko continues her attempt to rescue the key from Lupin's grasp. Jigen continues stopping her.

A year has since passed and Zenigata finally wonders where Jigen is and why he isn't trying to save Lupin. (He's always slow in remembering the one guy who is always with Lupin.) Speaking of Jigen, he's still hanging around outside the prison, watching the priest guy as he passes, each time appearing more richer. Jigen wonders what Lupin is up to, getting an idea.

Jigen disguises himself up as the priest and enters the prison, going in to see Lupin. Lupin tells him that the whole thing is a game with no plan. Jigen tries to help, but accepts whatever Lupin is going to do.

Lupin then mentions how one of his nails is a razor and that the guards never noticed it when they searched him. (No, don't do it, emo Lupin!) He uses it....to shave. (Phew, that was close...) He then asks for a shave, one of the guards going in to shave him. Instead the guard is grabbed, tricked by Lupin.

Zenigata is ready to say his goodbye to Lupin when word gets out that Lupin has escaped. Zenigata is way too thrilled (But I guess when the guy is his whole life, he would be.) and rushes to the cell, disappointed when the man inside appears to be Lupin, screaming about he isn't Lupin and how the guard is Lupin.

Lupin then blows it by mentioning poison gas, Zenigata then knowing that the guard really is Lupin, as the prison only has the electric chair. He then rushes off to save the guard from being executed while Lupin walks calmly out of the prison. Outside he is met by Jigen, the two driving off.

Fujiko stands at a cliff overlooking the ocean holding Lupin's gun. She is sad that he is dead, since she thinks he is, and throws his gun into the ocean. (Dude...)

Lupin then explains to Jigen how he was angry at being humiliated by Zenigata, who chose not to shoot him with real bullets. So, he'd rather be dead? I don't get it...

The two go to find the metal box, which Jigen hid in a forest. When they reach the forest they find out that it is no longer a forest and that it is being dynamited. The two rush forward to save the box from utmost peril, but are too late as it is blown up. Lupin gives Jigen a cigarette and the two do that creepy laughing way too hard thing and then run off together into the sunset. What. The. Hell.

Two lines that made me laugh: If you die, Zenigata will be sad because he'll have lost his purpose in life. (Jigen, as the priest, to Lupin)

You were surely the most important person to me. I think. (Fujiko, about Lupin, just before she throws his gun into the ocean)
